Learning in Blake Class

Summer Term

During the first half of the Summer Term, we learnt about inspirational women and witches and wizards. During the second half of the Summer Term, we are learning about pirates and the seaside.

Maypole Dancing

To celebrate May Day, the children in Blake Class took part in some maypole dancing. Once we perfected our dance, we performed it to the rest of the school during assembly.

Florence Nightingale Workshop

The first inspirational woman Blake Class have been learning about is Florence Nightingale. Sam from the Somerset Heritage Centre came in to teach us all about how she changed the history of nursing.

Sam talking to us about the importance of Florence Nightingale's work in Scutari.

The best part of the afternoon was the dressing up. Can you spot Florence Nightingale?

We also acted out the activities Florence Nightingale would have done at the hospital in Scutari.

Spring Term

During the first half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about Traditional Tales.

During the second half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about Animals.

How the Giraffe Got its Long Neck

During our art creativity week, we learnt about the story 'How the Giraffe Got its Long Neck'. The children used a variety of mediums to create giraffe art work.

Trip to Bristol Zoo

Blake Class went on a trip to Bristol Zoo. We had a great time looking at all of the animals and learning about their habitats. We also learnt about the different types of animals and found out whether they were a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore.

Trim Trail Fun!

Blake Class have really enjoyed testing out our new trim trail! Here are a few photos of our first time on it.

Winter Photos

As we have been learning about 'frozen' places in geography, we have had the chance to create our own winter landscape photos on the Ipads.

First we had to take a picture with our coats on.

Then we had to use natural materials to create a winter scene.

Once we had taken a photo of our winter scene, we imported our coat pictures to make it look like we were in our winter scene!

Alongside our traditional tale unit, we have been learning about castles. The children found out about the different features of a castle and the importance they had in the middle ages. We also had a go at making our own castle gateway with a moving portcullis.

Creating our own Fairy Tale

Blake Class have been busy planning their own fairy tales. We created our own settings and used the medium of paint to bring our ideas to life.

Autumn Term

During the first half of the Autumn Term, we have been learning about the work of Julia Donaldson. We have also be learning all about the country of Australia.

During the second half of the Autumn Term, we will be learning about Bridgwater Carnival and the Great Fire of London.

Christmas Crafts

The children have been getting very creative in Blake Class. They have been busy making Christmas cards and calendars.

Boat Experiment

Blake Class have been investigating different materials. Their challenge was to create a boat to carry the people of London across the River Thames during the Great Fire of London. They created boats out of paper, tin foil and sponge.

The Great Fire of London Workshop

Sam from the Somerset Heritage Centre came into Blake Class to teach us about the Great Fire of London.

She started by telling us lots of facts about the Great Fire.

We tried putting out a fire by passing a bucket of water down a long line, just like the people did during the Great Fire of London.

We also learnt about how Samuel Pepys wrote a diary during the fire. We had a go at writing our own diary with a quill and ink.

The best bit of the afternoon was dressing up in costumes from 1666. Can you spot Samuel Pepys and King Charles?

 Carnival Cart Workshop

In Blake Class, we have been making our own carnival carts. We invited our parents and carers into school to help us design, create and evaluate our carnival carts. This year we based our carnival carts on the Julia Donaldson books we learnt during the first half of the Autumn Term.

Once we had finished making our carnival carts, we held our very own Northgate Carnival to celebrate our fantastic work. We invited our parents and carers to the parade and we also had an official Bridgwater Carnival judge come and watch our parade.

Multi Cultural Week

During our multi cultural creativity week, we have been learning about Australia.

We enjoyed learning a traditional Australian dance. Once we learnt our dance, we performed it to the whole school.

We also made some Australian Anzac biscuits. Once we made the biscuits, we all took one home to try. They were very tasty!

We added all the ingredients to the bowl.

We mixed all the ingredients together and baked the biscuits for 20 minutes.

Our finished biscuits.

We became authors and wrote our own non-fiction books about Australia. We really enjoyed sharing our finished books with Explorer Class.

Finally we learnt about the history of the Aboriginal people and had a go at aboriginal dot painting. It was a busy but fun week!

Stick Man

We have been reading the story 'Stick Man' by Julia Donaldson. Once we learnt the story, we had a go at making our very own stick men. It was lots of fun!

Making Challah Bread

In RE, we are exploring the religion Judaism. We have been learning about the Jewish celebration of Shabbat where they share a special challah loaf. We had a go at making and sharing our very own challah bread.

Everyone had a go at mixing the dough.

We then plaited the dough.

Our finished challah bread.

 Kernius shared the bread with

 everyone. It was yummy!

A Squash and A Squeeze

The children have been looking at a range of Julia Donaldson books throughout the term. One of our class favourites is 'A Squash and A Squeeze'. The children really enjoyed learning and acting out the story.
