Blake Class



Welcome to Blake Class! My name is Miss Wood and I am the year 1 class teacher. Working in Blake Class we also have our class Teaching Assistant, Miss Brown as well as Mrs Parkin, our 1:1 support. We will be using this page throughout the year to keep you updated on our learning.

Summer B - Animal Kingdom

Superstar Reward

After filling up our superstar jar this half term, we enjoyed lots of games using th parachute!



Coronation of King Charles III

We enjoyed making crafts with our parents ready for our coronation parade. We also enjoyed an indoor picnic.




DT - Healthy Eating

We started the half term with a visit from Aspens who helped us to make a healthy snack.


We continued our DT learning about healthy eating by designing and making our own smoothies. We tried lots of different fruit before choosing our favourites for our drinks. 


We learnt how to prepare the fruit safely and hygienically.


We loved tasting our own creations!




Spring B - Under the Sea

This half term, we will be learning about the five oceans of the world.

Art - Dirty Beasts

We spent this half term working with year 2 to make sculptures inspired by Roald Dahl's Dirty Beasts. We learnt lots of different scultping techniques and used these to make our own innovated beasts.



Reading Gazebo

We enjoying visiting the under the sea reading gazebo this half term. We thought it was very relaxing to sharing a story under the sea!




Snow Day

We have learnt lots about the weather while learning about the seasons in our science lessons so we were very excited when snow arrived at Northgate! 



RE - Harvest

We planted tomato seeds when learning about the Christian Harvest in RE. We look forward to observing them as they gro and harvesting the fruits in the summer!



Red Nose Day

We joined the rest of the school in wering red to raise money to support Red Nose Day!


Spring A - To Infinity and Beyond!

This half term, we will be learning about the history of space travel.

History Week - Dawn of the Dinosaurs

We ended our half term with a History themed week. In Blake class, we learnt all about the time of the dinosaurs and three eras in which dinosaurs were alive.

We started the week with a visit from Jackson from As Creatives who taught us all about the different dinosaurs and how the became extinct through drama.



We were paleontologists for the day and had a go at excavating our own fossils.


We had a go at making our own impressions of fossils using salt dough - we couldn't make real fossils as they take over 10,000 years to form!




PE - Basketball

To finish our learning about basketball this half term, we had an interhouse skills competition. We worked with year 2 to compete against the other house teams.



Music - Glockenspiels

This half term, we have been learning how to play the glockenspiel in music. We have practised playing and performing songs as a class as well as improvising and composing our own short pieces as a group.




An alien crash landed at Northgate!

Blake class had to become detectives to investigate the alien spaceship that had crash landed at school!

We had a very busy few weeks leading up to Christmas!

We enjoyed taking part in our KS1 Nativity 'It's a Party!'


We also enjoyed a Christmas dinner and a Christmas Party in the last week of school.




In Art this half term we have been learning all about printing. We used our hands as printing places to create colourful backgrounds before using our observation drawing skills to add details of flowers on top.



In computing this half term, we have been learning about programming and debugging. We practised giving our partners lots of different instructions before using the BeeBots. We even created an obstacle course for our BeeBots to complete!




To start our History topic of The Great Fire of London we had a workshop with Sharon from the South West Heritage Trust. We got to handle real artefacts from 1666, dress up as people form the past and write with a quill just like Samuel Pepys!

We have had a very busy start to the year and have enjoyed learning all about ourselves and the world we live in.


Multi-Cultural Week

Blake Class enjoyed lots of different Australian themed activities during multi-cultural week including, baking anzac biscuits, exploring aboriginal dot painting and taking a virtual trip to some of the most famous Australian landmarks.






We enjoyed our first school trip of year 1 to Tyntesfield. We got to take part in lots of different plant themed activities and explore the grounds.




Bridgwater Carnival

We have enjoyed learning about Bridgwater Carnival as part of Our Local Area topic. Miss Wood came to tell us all about being in a carnival club and taught us some carnival dancing. We even got to try on some of her costumes!



We started the year with our whole school text 'Five Bears'. Blake Class had great fun role playing as the different bears and re-enacting the story.




We started our learning about the human body and the five senses by naming and labelling as many different body parts as we could.



We explored the school grounds using our senses.


We also learnt how to use out sense of taste to describe different foods.



Design and Technology

In DT this half term we are learning about wheels and axles. We started by investigating how wheels turn and learning about the different parts of a wheel.


We were so pleased to have our parents in for the day to help us make out very own carnival carts.




We are learning about coding this half term. We have started to investigate the different we could give a code-a-pillar and the effect these had.
