Brunel Class Archive 2022/23
Welcome to Brunel Class (Year 2)!
My name is Miss Walford and I am the class teacher. Miss Wood (a Higher Level Teaching Assistant), Mrs Symons (1:1 Support Assistant) and Mrs Popham (1:1 Support Assistant) work alongside me and together we make up the Brunel class team.
The children have settled in really well and have already done some fantastic things at Northgate.

At the beginning of the academic year, I held a curriculum meeting to provide more information about the teaching and learning in Year 2. Please find the presentation from the meeting below. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Snow Day Poems
Brunel Class have enjoyed playing in the snow this week. They used their five senses to fully experience the feeling of snow and then wrote their own snow senses poems.
Liz from Farmlink came to Brunel Class to teach us all about animals and their habitats. She also brought a special guest - Mary the Little Red Hen! The children enjoyed finding out about how different habitats are suitable for different animals.
World Book Day
Brunel Class enjoyed dressing up as a word for World Book Day.
During the day we went to the library to read our favourite books and then we wrote our own book reviews.
Science - Our Local Habitat
During our science lesson, Brunel Class enjoyed investigating our local habitat. They found lots of different insects and used their leaf spotter sheets to identify the different trees in our school grounds.

History Week - The Battle of Hastings
We ended the term with a history creativity week. Brunel Class learnt all about The Battle of Hastings. We started the week with a visit from Jackson who taught us all about the battle through drama. The children really enjoyed acting out the battle!
We also used the ipads to research facts about The Battle of Hastings and created our own non-chronological reports.
To end an exciting week, we found about the meaning behind different Norman shields and then had a go at designing and making our own shields.
Science - Pet Research
In science, we have been using the ipads to research how to look after a pet. After we completed our research, we wrote our own non-chronological reports that we are going to share with the Year 1 children.
Music - Ocarinas
This half term Brunel Class have been enjoying some ocarina lessons from Somerset Music. The children have learnt how to play simple tunes using the notes A, B and G and they also had a go at improvising and composing their own scores.
Geography - Digimaps
In geography, we have continued to explore different maps. We went outside and took photos of different human and physical features in our school grounds. Then, we worked together to plot the photos on a digital map.
English - The Snail and the Whale
In English, we have been reading the story 'The Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson. We took part in a conscience alley to help the snail decide whether or not she should go on the adventure with the whale.
Autumn Term 2
During the second half of the Autumn Term we were learning about fairy tales. We read, retold and innovated the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Science - RSPCA Visit
In science, we have been learning about animals and their babies. We enjoyed a visit from the RSPCA to learn more about how to look after animals. The children found out about different types of pets and what they need to stay happy and healthy. They also learnt about the different dangers at Christmas time and had a go at using different seeds and oats to make reindeer food.
PSHE - Fire Service Visit
Brunel Class had a visit from the Devon and Somerset Fire Service. We learnt about different fire hazards in our home and how to stay safe during a fire. We also learnt the 'stop, drop and roll' technique to protect ourselves if our clothes catch fire.
Visit to the Engine Room
Brunel Class were lucky enough to be invited to The Engine Room during the 2022 Into Film Festival. They enjoyed watching The Snail and the Whale and Zog and the Flying Doctors on the big screen. The children were super role models for the school during the event.
Geography - Compass Directions
In geography, we have been learning about the points of a compass. We gave our friend instructions and they had to use their compass to navigate around the school.

Multicultural Creativity Week - China
During our whole school multicultural creativity week, Brunel Class have been learning about China. We learnt about the festival of Chinese New Year and made our own Chinese lanterns and paper dragons.
We also had a go at tasting a variety of different Chinese food. Some of us liked the food but some of us did not!
World Mental Health Day
The children in Brunel Class wore yellow to raise awareness for World Mental Health Day. During the day, we took part in a range of activities to promote a positive mental health and wellbeing. Our favourite was mindfulness colouring!
The children in Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying gardening club this half term. They have enjoyed digging up the weeds and learning about different types of plants.
DT - Running Stitch
In DT we are going to be making our own superhero masks. Before we can make our masks, the children have been learning how to sew a simple running stitch. Some of the children found this very tricky but they kept persevering and by the end of the lesson they had all sewn a line using a running stitch.
The children in Brunel Class enjoyed participating in a scootability session run by The Bridgwater Way. They learnt how to ride a scooter safely, including how to safely stop at a crossing, and what to wear to protect them if they fall off. At the end of the session, we even learnt how to do a few tricks!
Computing - Bee-Bots
Brunel Class enjoyed working together to program the Bee-Bot to move in different directions. We revised skills learnt in Year 1 and created our own obstacle courses.
