Learning in Brunel Class

 Summer Term 1

During the first half of the Summer Term, we will be learning about inventors and inventions.

Science - Plant Investigation

In our science lessons, we are learning about plants. The children have enjoyed working together to set up an investigation to find out what plants need to grow and stay healthy. We have taken away one need from each plant (e.g. water, light or soil) and we are looking forward to seeing what happens to each plant.

The First Aeroplane Flight

In history, we have been learning about The Wright Brothers. We found out that the brothers created the first motor-powered aeroplane and we were amazed to find out that it only flew in the sky for 12 seconds. The children also enjoyed working together to act out what they think happened on the day of the first ever aeroplane flight.

Coding with Lightbot

During our computing lessons, we have been learning about algorithms. We had to create our own algorithm to make Lightbot move and turn on the light. It was quite tricky but the children kept persevering and they were able to complete the challenge.

Spring Term 2

During the second half of the Spring Term, we were learning about animals and their habitats.

Children's Mental Health Week

To celebrate Children's Mental Health Week, we carried out lots of activities throughout the week to promote a positive mental health and wellbeing. The children enjoyed taking part in yoga, mindfulness colouring and listening to a story. On the last day of the week, we dressed up in clothes that make us feel happy.

We also thought about how much we have grown, both physically and mentally, since we were a baby. We made growth rainbows which are proudly displayed on our class window.

English - Non-Chronological Reports

The children have been using the internet to research facts about Tobago. Once they had found out lots of facts, they wrote a non-chronological report about the country.

Safer Internet Day

To raise awareness for Safer Internet Day, we read the story Digiduck and the Magic Castle. We found out about the importance of keeping our passwords safe and not sharing personal information with anyone online. We also wrote a kind message to Digiduck and drew a picture of people who can help to keep us safe online on Purple Mash.

NSPCC Number Day

On Friday 4th February, we dressed up as numbers to raise money for the NSPCC.

During the day we completed lots of fun number activities. Our favourite activity was called Measure Me. We had to work together to measure different parts of our body.

Music - Creating and Composing

During music this half term, we have been exploring how to create sounds in our environment. We listened to a song about Loch Ness in Scotland and enjoyed creating the sound of water with different instruments. We played our compositions alongside the song to create a wonderful piece of music.

Godly Stories with Meg

Meg from Westcan Church visited Brunel Class to teach us about baptism. We listened to the story of John the Baptist and had a go at acting out our own baptism service. We always enjoy Meg's visits, and we can't wait for her to come back again soon!

Autumn Term 2

During the second half of the Autumn Term we were learning about fairy tales. We read, retold and innovated the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Numbots Dress Up Day

On Tuesday 9th November, we enjoyed dressing up as Numbots to celebrate Maths Week England.

During the day we played on Numbots and we completed an Nrich problem called Robot Monsters. We had to use the different body parts to make the tallest and shortest robot.

Science - Do Bananas Make us Run Faster?

In science, we have been learning about how to stay fit and healthy. We carried out an interesting experiment to see if bananas make us run faster.

First we ran a lap of the school playground. Our partner used a stopwatch to measure how fast we ran. Then, we ate a banana and ran the same lap of the school playground again. We found out that bananas do not make us run faster.

Visit from Willmott Dixon

Danielle from Willmott Dixon came into school to tell us all about the new Northgate Development. She also set us a challenge of creating the tallest building using straw and we enjoyed working together to complete the task.

We learnt about the importance of fortune cookies in Chinese culture and had a go at making our own.

History - Mary Seacole

We have been learning about Mary Seacole during Black History Month. We found out about all of her achievements during the Crimean War and the difficulties she faced in her lifetime. We have written facts about her and created a timeline of her life.

DT - Running Stitch

In DT we are going to be making our own superhero masks. The children are very excited about this!

Before we can make our masks, the children have been learning how to sew a simple running stitch. Some of the children found this very tricky but they kept persevering and by the end of the lesson they had all sewn a line using a running stitch.

English - Traction Man

In English, we have been reading the story Traction Man by Mini Grey. We brought our own superhero toys into school and wrote sentences to describe them. Then, we created our own Top Trump cards for our superheroes. We made them into a class set and enjoy playing with our Top Trumps during golden time.

RE - Judaism

In RE we have been learning about the Torah. We found out that once they have finished reading the Torah in the Synagogue they have a celebration called Simchat Torah. We re-enacted the celebration by creating flags and dancing around the classroom.

Sharing a Shell

We read the story Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson and took it in turns to act as a character from the story. We asked each other questions and we had to answer them in role.
