Art and Design

Subject Intent

By the time they leave Northgate, we aim for our children to;

have explored a diverse range of traditional and contemporary Artists, Craftspeople and Designers, fostering their curiosity and understanding of the world around them.At Northgate, we understand that there are many benefits of creative activities. Through our art curriculum, we hope to boost pupil's confidence and self-esteem, develop our pupil's imagination, nurture skills and teach concepts important for self-expression. By exploring the use of visual elements (ingredients for drawing), our pupils will develop their essential knowledge and skills that empower them creatively both now and in the future.

At Northgate Primary School, we are committed to providing each child an exciting Art and Design curriculum. We enable children to achieve high standards through a creative and enriching curriculum. We are passionate about developing and promoting the Arts through an enjoyable, creative and cross curricular approach. We believe that Art and Design is embedded in each subject we do as we mark our paper with ink and pencil.

We encourage children to share and explore both their own and new diverse cultural experiences in the Arts and we aim to enable children to achieve high standards through a creative and enriching curriculum. As well as focused high-quality teaching of the National Curriculum Programmes of Study in classes, we enrich our children’s learning and experiences of the Arts through a range of school time and after school specialist club opportunities. We are also committed to providing opportunities for our pupils to share and perform their abilities and talents in the Arts both during a range of events in school and in the wider community. We want the children and families to be proud of their work.

At Northgate, we believe that high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to evaluate their own progress and develop a rich bank of Art and Design vocabulary. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation

 Children’s discovery of world of Art and Design begins in the Early Years where they are provided with daily opportunities to freely express themselves with a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. All children are encouraged to be imaginative and to use the resources to represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings in original ways through Art and Design.

At Northgate, we follow the Futura Curriculum and we believe that throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, Art and Design education supports the development of:

  • Free expression, we actively promote the confidence and self-belief of children’s skills in Art and Design and we believe that it is a subject that supports the children’s state of mind. We believe that each lesson provides opportunities for children to grown and self-reflect.
  • Collaboratively working, each child has the ability to analyse, evaluate and improve their work. With this, they support their peers in class through making observations of others work and using these observations to provide their peers with feedback in a positive manner.
  • Their knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers- moving onto great architects in Key Stage Two.

During Key Stage 1, Art and Design at Northgate expands the children’s creativity and imagination through providing art, craft and design activities relating to the children’s own identity and experiences. We use the locality in which they live in and their exciting topics to support the development of their Art and Design skills.

During Key Stage 2, we build on the children’s understanding of Arts and Design through providing more complex activities. Children’s experiences help them to understand the diverse roles and functions of Art and Design in the world around them. We actively encourage children to start to reflect and think critically about their own, and their peers work.
